Kenilworth Country Foods Pty Ltd factory is located in the Sunshine Coast hinterland at Kenilworth, where the company manufactures it's award winning cheeses and where the complete selection of the company's products is available for free tasting and purchase.
All Kenilworth cheese is handcrafted using the highest quality milk from the farms surrounding the factory. The traditional methods of cheese making are employed with the cheese turned by hand during the manufacturing process. This gives the Kenilworth product the taste of difference.
A Legacy of Cheese
The decision by a young Danish man nearly a century ago to leave his homeland and seek his fortune means a lot to many Kenilworth residents.
If Peter Hansen had not travelled to London and taken up an offer of free travel to Australia for a year's farm labouring in Queensland, the chance of the town attracting and retaining a profitable cheese factory would have been slim indeed.
Peter Hansen landed in Brisbane on Christmas Eve 1900 and worked for a year in Toowoomba. At the end of his contract he was allowed to select 320 bush acres for himself at a place known as Box Gully near Malling.
Over the years Peter Hansen forged such a thriving dairy that he had to find use for the excess of milk he produced. His initial attempts at manufacturing traditional cheeses of his European homeland failed due to different climates, but he persisted until the highly successful Malling Red and Malling Roma cheeses were born.
One of Peter's original cheese makers was able to pass on his skills gained from spending time with Peter to a number of cheesemakers in Kenilworth. It was a small team of cheesemakers with the training of making cheese by hand that rescued the Kraft Cheese factory from Closure in 1989.
In September 1990, Kenilworth Country Foods Pty Ltd opened it's doors with Peter Hansen's Roma and Red Malling cheese as the cornerstone of a wide range of handcrafted cheddar cheeses.
Over the past decade Kenilworth Cheese has won numerous awards for its products at National and State shows.
So in typical Australian never say die manner yet another Aussie original is available and still made in traditional style at one of Queensland's last privately owned and operated cheese factory.
The following is a brief description of the various cheeses that are available.
Classic Mild, Classic Mature, Classic Vintage
The Classic range of cheese is one of the very few traditionally handmade types of cheddar on the market today. Handmade and matured in cloth are two factors that make this cheese unique. Cloth allows the cheese to breathe and mature in a distinctive style.
The Classic range is matured over a minimum period of three months and then, depending on the stage required, is left to mature into mild, mature or vintage. Classic cheese is usually waxed in yellow wax before sale.
Malling Red
Created by the master cheesemaker Peter "Poppa" Hansen at Malling on the Darling Downs in the early 1900's hence the name, Malling Red is made to Poppa's original recipe and can be called the only true Australian cheese. The cheese has a sharp flavour and is matured for nine months, graded monthly until such time as the Kenilworth cheese maker is satisfied that the flavour and taste is up to Poppa's standard. The cheese is waxed in red wax and then put out to sale. Malling Red is one of Kenilworth's most popular cheeses.
Malling Roma
Another of Peter "Poppa" Hansen's original cheeses, the Malling Roma has an Italian style taste. Roma Malling cheese, is hand made with an open texture with a sharp distinctive flavour. Roma Malling is a cheese for those who really appreciate good cheese. Matured for a minimum of nine months the cheese is sold unwaxed.
Vintage
Hand made, matured over twelve months and graded regularly before it is released for sale, this is traditional sharp English style cheedar. Waxed usually in black wax, the cheese has a robust flavout. Ideally matched with a robust red wine.
Kalaas
Created at Kenilworth by our master cheese makers, Kalaas is characterised by a smooth aromatic flavour and soft moist body. The cheese is a regular award winner at state and national shows and is one of the most under rated of the Kenilworth range. Kalaas slices like a dream and has a superb melting quality.
Cooloola
A newly developed cheese from Kenilworth, Cooloola is renowened for it's smooth after taste, hint of sweetness with a firm body, excellent texture and slicing qualities. Cooloola is a mild cheese matured for six weeks.
Natural Garlic
We have added just the right amount of natural garlic and created a distinctive hand crafted cheddar cheese unique to Kenilworth. The cheese has a superb aroma and great character. It's versatility lets you take it from the kitchen to the barbeque. Natural Garlic melts and can be shredded if you are looking for something different.
Garlic and Pepper Cheddar Cheese
To our handcrafted Cheddar we have added a little garlic and pepper to give the cheese a hint of flavour. Garlic and Pepper is one of Kenilworth's most popular cheeses.
Vintage Club
Combining the best vintage cheddars we have made a fine textured cheese with the full traditional vintage flavour. Robust, Vintage Club is one of the most popular Kenilworth cheeses. Usually waxed in black wax, Vintage Club is ideal to place on a platter to accompany those Friday night drinks at home.
Spiced Gouda

Mild and Mature Cheddar
Handcrafted by the traditional method, Kenilworth Mild and Mature Cheddars retain their taste long after you have purchased the product. The cheese is turned by hand though the last manufacturing process giving the cheese a unique taste. The mature cheese is graded regularly to ensure that it reaches the right maturity before being available for sale.
Kenilworth, over the past few years, has experimented with a number of flavours and types. The company has created recently a range of processed cheeses, which are proving to be very popular.
Australian Smoked
Combining a blend of Kenilworth cheeses, we have added smoke flavouring and produced a cheese that rivals the alternative European styles. Australian Smoked is a popular cheese for the B-B-Q or the cheese platter.

Cheesemakers Selection Club Cheese range
With the ever-increasing demand for a variety of cheese Kenilworth has created this year a further range of cheeses known as the Cheesemakers Selection. This combines a number of existing cheese types though a different process and through this we have added spices and layer production techniques to provide a range of cheese that is both colourful in presentation but at the same time have allowed for the original Kenilworth full taste to be retained in the final product.
Sun-dried Tomato and Olive Club
Olives have been added to Kenilworth White Cheddar bases and Sun-dried Tomato has been added to our Red Cheddar base. They both have then been combined and layered to provide a flavour that is both yummy and colourful in appearance. Ideal for platters.
Garlic and Pepper Club
We have taken our Red Cheddar base, added Garlic and Pepper, then combined this with a white Kenilworth White Cheddar base to which we mixed in bell peppers and herbs. The two separate cheese bases are then layered to provide a spicy cheese ideal for platters.
Pepper Club
Bell peppers have been added to our Kenilworth Cheddars together with chives and black peppers. The result is a spicy tasting club cheese.
Chilli Club
A spoonful of chilli powder mixed in with Kenilworth Cheddars and before you know it you are in India.
Queensland Spice
Our Red Cheddar mixed with herbs and spices gives this cheese both colour and taste.
